How often should you change your air filter?

One of the most common questions we are asked is: "How often should I replace my air filter?"

Generally, we recommend changing the air filter in your system regularly to keep your system running smoothly and help lower your energy bills. Having said that, depending on the type of air filter you use, the frequency of replacing the filters may vary.

In general, we recommended replacing fiberglass filters every 30 days and pleated filters every 90 days. However, there are other variables to consider. For example:

  • Do you have small children in the home?
  • Does your home have pets?
  • Does anyone in your home suffer from allergies or asthma?

If any of these conditions exist in your home, you should consider changing your filters more often.

We recommend you set a reminder to replace your filters routinely. It's a simple task that can save your family a lot of future headaches and unnecessary costs.  Remember; the smoother your system is running, the less likely you’ll have unwanted, costly repairs down the road.

Failure to replace your system's filter regularly can lead to dirty or clogged filters, which can cause:

  • Equipment to malfunction and costly repairs
  • Reduced airflow, meaning your system has to work harder, increasing your energy bills
  • Dust and allergens circulating back into the airflow of your home
  • Clogged ductwork
  • Higher energy bills and monthly costs to heat and cool your home
